April 20, 2013 – HVVA Visit

On April 20, the Society for the Preservation of Hudson Valley Vernacular Architecture (HVVA) visited the Kimlin Cider Mill and Kimlin Farm House on a tour of the Town of Poughkeepsie.  The new owner of the Kimlin Farm House across from the Mill served tea and cookies for the guests as they observed his progress on restoring the house, which he is currently deconstructing. The HVVA members were intrigued by the Kimlin Cider Mill as well as the house. The older renovations to the house resemble the similar renovations made to the Mill: materials were salvaged and reused as much as possible.  We were glad to show the HVVA the Mill and hear their interpretations of its construction.

June 9, 2013 – An Apple Afternoon

Participants joined us at the home of our president for our spring gathering to benefit restoration activities at the mill.  Atendees enjoyed homebrewed cider, homemade refreshments, talks on the art of cider making, viewings of recently-acquired historic artifacts and artwork, and a raffle.  Talks were given by apple grower and cider making Elizabeth Ryan of Breezy Hill Orchard, and homebrewer Ian McGregor.

September 21-22, 2013 – Arlington Street Fair

Cider Mill Friends participated in the Arlington Street Fair by setting up a table along Raymond Avenue.  Information about our group was available.

October 2013 – “Dutchess Treasures” Exhibit

The exhibit “Dutchess Treasures” at the Mid-Hudson Heritage Center (317 Main Street, Poughkeepsie, NY) featured historic sites from around the county. Artwork of the Kimlin Cider Mill, created at various years, was included in the exhibit. The exhibit ran until October 31, 2013.

October 26, 2013 – Old Fashioned Cider Tasting

As part of Cider Week NY, we had our Old Fashioned Cider Tasting event at the Kimlin Cider Mill from 12-5 pm.  Festivities included tours of the historic (circa 1880) mill, cider tasting (including tasting glass), bobbing for apples, raffles, and cook out.  A full set of photos of the event can be found here.

November 2-3, 2013 – Fair Trade Bazaar

We had a table at the Fair Trade Bazaar at the Aula (adjacent to Ely Hall) on the campus of Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, NY.

November 24, 2013 – Walk for History

Cider Mill Friends joined Friends of Jackson House for the “Walk for History” across the Walkway Over The Hudson.  The walk’s goal was to highlight the historic resources of the area.  It was a small but passionate group of people.  We had a poster up explaining our successful “path to preservation,” which is something the Friends of Jackson House are looking to do for the Jackson House in Fishkill which is threatened with demolition.  Unfortunately the Village of Fishkill does not have a historic commission like the Town of Poughkeepsie, even though they have a historic district.
